Delaware 2009 International Energy Conservation Code Duct Testing Standards
The 2009 IECC 403.2 regarding the installation of HVAC Air Ducts was a major leap for Delaware in Energy Efficiency. With the introduction of the for Air Duct Testing, Delaware gave the responsibility to each County (New Castle, Kent, and Sussex) to ensure that all new duct systems installed are tested using the duct blaster. With this advancement in energy efficiency code, Delaware Residents are closer to achieving the Fifth Fuel "Energy Efficiency".
To meet the 2009 IECC Duct Code all duct work needs to be sealed and tested by a BPI Certified Contractor and be within the allowable leakage rate. Dave Lawson, Owner of Dr. Energy Saver Delaware is a certified BPI Professional! The 2009 code requires all ductwork located outide the thermal envelope (Attic, Vented Crawlspace) to be tested. The duct blaster testing can be done at one of the two stages (postconstruction or rough-in) but most towns like Bethany Beach require the testing to be completed during rough-in to ensure that any leaks can be fixed before Insulation and Drywall are installed. The second method postconstruction is generally used for retrofiting new ductwork in older homes and also allows a blower door to be used to determine the leakage to outdoors.
