How We Make Homes Healthier in the Delmarva Area
When I started working here, I wasn’t really sure how making a home more comfortable and energy efficient would also make it healthier. I decided to do some research on our website and ask our certified inspectors some questions to learn the possible health benefits a comfortable home can offer. Here is what I learned.
Just like a scarf can be too tight, so can your home.
It’s getting colder out. That means many people break out the warm clothes and bundle themselves up tightly. This is also a popular time of year for people to get their homes air sealed to help keep cold air out and the warm air in. But there is such a thing as a home being sealed too tightly.
There needs to be some places for fresh air to enter the home and circulate out the stale air. Our inspectors are able to discuss with you where in your home these looser seals should be and the amount of air that will circulate through your home. Circulating the air will lead to better indoor air quality.
Your ducts shouldn’t quack.
We all know ductwork doesn’t actually quack, but your ducts can let air escape – which could cause some sort of noise when your heater or central air is turned on. If you can hear a noise, your ducts may not be properly sealed and could be losing air. Any place where your ducts let air out could be where they are letting in dust. Once turned on, your HVAC units will be pushing the dust around your home. Circulating dust could mean serious allergies and asthma flair ups. Proper duct sealing and duct cleaning will help reduce the amount of dust pushed around the home.
Dirt crawlspaces force their bad habits on the rest of your home.
A dirt crawlspace can push moisture, dust, bugs, mice, and plant pollen up through your floors if it isn’t properly sealed. Crawlspace encapsulation seals the home off from the dirt and moisture and reduces your home's allergens and asthma triggers.
Once encapsulated, the floors above your crawlspace will be warmer, you will notice less dust, there will be no moisture, and bugs will be unable to enter your home through the crawlspace. The added bonus - no moisture means no rotting wood, no mold and it will even help prevent termites since the wood will be too dry for them to live in your crawlspace.
