New Radon Mitigation System FAILS! in Middletown, DE
Challenge
Like this unfortunate home owner in Middletown, DE, you had your home tested and found radon levels were too high. So you paid good money to have a radon mitigation system installed and assumed you could breathe safely. NOT NECESSARILY. READ ON.
Not all radon mitigation companies seem to know what they are doing. And one of the WORST things companies are telling people is they can wait up to two years before testing their homes after they have installed the new radon mitigation system.
That's what this homeowner was told. She had her radon mitigation system installed in July of 2022, just a year and a half ago. After attending a seminar conducted for realtors by Lawson Home Services brand Ambassador, William Wilson, Elizabeth decided to have her home tested. To her complete and utter surprise radon levels were shown to be 9.9 pCi/L, more than double the EPA action level of 4.0. She immediately contacted Lawson Home Services, David Lawson, Delawares ONLY Soil Gas Mitigation Compliance Inspector, to inspect her system and determine why it is not doing its job.
Mr. Lawson discovered many problems with the new system and remarked "About the only thing done right was the 4" Schedule 40 pvc pipe.
Among the problems Mr. Lawson discovered, was the joint between the basement slab and the foundation was not sealed properly. In fact the job was done so poorly you could actually see the gravel underneath the slab (Look at the pictures and see for yourself - including the sticker showing the name of the company that installed the equipment and the date it was installed).
Solution
There are many things that must be done to bring this mitigation system into compliance with standards set by the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST). Unfortunately, for this homeowner, the entire system will have to be replaced with a system that meets the standards.
NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING - this day and age there is a lot of shoddy work being done by "radon mitigation contractors". So if you had a radon mitigation system installed in your home, and radon levels in your home were not re-tested within 48 hours of the installation, then the contractor FAILED! their responsibility. You owe to yourself and the occupants of your home to check to see if you got what you paid for. Call Lawson Home Services and have your system inspected by Delaware's only Soil Gas Mitigation Compliance Inspector.
