Flex Duct not Properly Sealed
The homeowner of this Viola, DE home called Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva for a whole home energy evaluation. Her heating and air expenses weren't justified given the lack of comfort she experienced at home. Our Certified Home Comfort Specialist found that there were some pretty obvious causes for energy loss in the attic. The dark coloration on the insulation indicates that there is air flow coming from the flex duct. When a duct is properly installed and sealed there shouldn't be any signs of air flow on the outside present.
Flex Duct not Connected?
Our Certified Home Comfort Specialist discovered what looked like a flex duct that was not connected to the main air supply. If left in this manner, the unconnected flex duct could cause adverse side effects in the attic. The mixing of cold and hot air would create moisture and over time microbial growth would occur. These homeowners were smart enough to call Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva when something didn't quite feel right to them and are so happy they did!
Flex Duct NOT Connected
Upon further inspection of the flex duct our Certified Home Comfort Specialist did in fact find that the flex duct was not connected to the trunk duct at all! It had been loosely wrapped with duct tape in hopes that it would hold and as you can clearly see, it did not. Every bit of conditioned air (hot or cold) that the homeowner's have paid for has been needlessly and uselessly pumped into the attic, heating and cooling the area of their least concern for comfort in the home.
