Ductwork - How does this stop Air Leaks?
Using floor joist as duct work is called panning. Under the current 2009 and 2012 Energy Code it is no longer an acceptable practice. The main issue with panning duct work like this is air leakage, when first installed everything looks good, but over time moisture in the crawlspace or basement causes the wood to expand and contract.
