This home was built back in 1935, long before much was known about building science. We've learned a lot since then, about the downfalls of commonly accepted construction methods of the past century. We know now that ventilated crawlspaces are not at all the best way to do construct a crawlspace. Dirt floors, outdoor air circulating underneath the floor structures, and many other problems are caused by ventilating crawlspaces. We see in the pictures just how the humid musty environment of the crawlspace does to the wooden structures in the crawlspace - first fungi and mold begin to grow, leading to rotting of the wood, and eventually a total failure of the structures supporting the floors. That's a very expensive consequence. And there are others.  The was we do it now is to encapsulate the crawlspace, and we have modern materials to do it effectively. We don't try to hang fiberglass insulation from the floor joists because gravity will eventually have its way and the insulation will drop away leaving the floor deck above directly exposed to outdoor air - and cold floors means cold rooms.  This house could use a lot of tender loving Lawson Home Services care.
