Cantilevered Floor Dover, DE Home
A cantilevered floor is one that sticks out further than the wall below it like this one does in the photo.
Exposed Cantilever
Once the vinyl soffit is taken down the cantilever is exposed. Inadequate insulation that does not completely fill each joist bay does little to stop the flow of air from entering the house. Here you can see the cracks that would allow air to leak in creating a cold floor for the room above and a cold ceiling for the room below it.
Exhaust Duct Never Vented
This picture depicts a bathroom fan exhaust that was never vented to the outside. Had this gone undetected, the moisture, which has no where to go, would have eventually collected in the insulation potentially causing microbial growth with the change of weather or pest problems which could all lead to damage of the structure of the home.
SilverGlo Insulation in Cantilever
These homeowners have chosen to have our SilverGlo rigid foam board installed to insulate their cantilevers. SilverGlo has a 24% higher R-value than standard EPS foam. Paired with the radiant barrier on both sides of the SilverGlo block and special sealing foam this is an optimal way of insulating and preventing the flow of air into the home.
Insulated Cantilever
After the SilverGlo blocks were installed and air sealed the existing insulation has been put back into the bays creating a much tighter fit and some added R-value.
Cantilever with Exhaust Vent
Here the soffit has been replaced and a vent has been properly installed and attached to the bathroom fan exhaust. It will no longer pose a threat of creating moisture in the cantilever that could potentially lead to damage of the home's structure.
