It may not be something commonly thought about but yes, a flue pipe like this can cause moisture damage to the surrounding structure. Since fireplaces are used in cold weather, and chances are the attic in which it is housed is cold, and the air traveling through the flue is hot it creates condensation on the flue pipe and surrounding areas. Flue pipes should be enclosed to prevent this from happening.
