Small Attic Entrance
This small entrance is the only way to access the attic. The thin plywood "door" does very little in regards to keeping the air in the attic and home separated.
Unwanted Guests
In this picture you can see that these homeowners had some unwanted guests living upstairs. The hole in the soffit that is allowing in direct sunlight can be seen in the middle of the picture and is more than likely where the birds and mice made their way into the attic.
Batted and Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation
In an effort to cut down on their energy costs the homeowners had another layer of insulation, this time batted, placed on top of the already existing blown-in fiberglass.
Not Enough Insulation in Bear, DE Attic
Even with the double layer of insulation in this Bear, DE attic it still does not reach an R-Value of 19. New construction homes in this area have a required minimum of R-38 installed in the ceilings/attics.
Cellulose Insulation Installed
The Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva team has sealed this attic and have blown-in cellulose insulation to an R-value of 60! That is more than 3x the insulation that previously existed.
An Improved Attic Access
In order to keep the cellulose from falling through the attic access the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva have created a barrier with ample room as to not disturb the cellulose. Instead of just leaving that area uninsulated they have laid down SilverGlo under the plywood deck. SilverGlo is a rigid foam board insulation with radiant barrier.
